Colourism or pigmentocracy is discrimination by skin color and is very common in countries that have suffered colonization in Europe and in post-slavery countries. In a simplified way, the term means that the more pigmented a person, the more exclusion and discrimination that person will suffer.
Unlike racism, which is oriented towards the identification of the subject as belonging to a certain race in order to discriminate, colorism is oriented only in the color of the person's skin. This means that even if a person is recognized as dark-skinned , black or Afro-descendant, the tonality of their skin will be decisive for the treatment that society will give to it. Colorism hinders and even completely prevents the access of dark-skinned people to certain places in society, which consequently damages or impedes their access to services that are rightfully theirs, in certain places.

"Perpetuated during slavery and by the media which seems to suggest lighter skin females to be of a higher stance than darker ones.
Perpetuated by rappers who often show more lighter skinned women in videos and hardly any darker ones.
Perpetuated by some Black men who treat lighter skinned females in a higher regard than darker toned ones.
An untrue implication that darker skin girls cannot be as fine as lighter ones."
